Erectile Dysfunction Treatment Options If you're suffering from erectile dysfunction, you're not alone. ED affects millions of men of all ages, and there are many treatment options available to you. Learn about your options and find the right treatment for you.

 Erectile Dysfunction Treatment Options

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common type of male sexual dysfunction. It is when a man has trouble getting or keeping an erection. ED becomes more common as you get older. But it’s not a natural part of aging. Some people have trouble speaking with their doctors about sex. But if you have ED, you should tell your doctor. ED can be a sign of health problems. It may mean your blood vessels are clogged. It may also be a sign of nerve damage from diabetes. If you have ED, you and your doctor can work on finding a treatment that’s right for you.

Your doctor may start you on a smaller dose of the ED drug if you already take an alpha blocker, or may recommend the alpha blocker tamsulosin (Flomax), which affects blood pressure less. These medications might not treat your ED immediately. You may need to work with your doctor to find the right dose and drug.

Injections are a treatment for ED when pills don’t work. They’re also called penile injections. Alprostadil (Caverject Impulse, Edex) is the drug most often used. The medicine is injected with a very fine needle into the base or side of the penis. Alprostadil relaxes smooth muscle tissue to enhance blood flow into the penis. It must be injected shortly before intercourse. Yet this treatment has potential side effects, such as pain and priapism (an erection lasting too long).

Vacuum devices

A vacuum device (also called a vacuum erection device) is a hollow tube with a hand-powered or battery-powered pump. The tube is placed over the penis, then the pump is used to suck out the air inside the tube. This creates a partial vacuum around the penis, which helps to draw blood into the corpora cavernosa. The returning blood fills the spaces in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand. A tension ring (a type of cock ring) is then placed around the base of the penis to maintain the erection. Vacuum devices are safe, relatively inexpensive, and reliable. They are available over the counter. But they require patience and self-control to use.

Penis pumps

Penis pumps are also effective, but they must be used before sex. The erection is then maintained by placing a ring around the base of the penis.

Inflatable or rigid penile implants are a treatment option for men with ED if other treatments have failed. Penile implants are usually not recommended until other methods have been tried first. If you choose penile implants, you and your doctor will need to make sure that the area where the implant will be placed is healthy.

Lifestyle changes

If you smoke, quitting will improve your erections. Cutting down on or giving up alcohol may also help. Exercise regularly. It can help with underlying conditions that play a part in erectile dysfunction in a number of ways, including reducing stress, helping you lose weight and increasing blood flow. If you have diabetes, get it under control. Eating healthy foods, exercising and losing excess weight can help.

If you’re dealing with erectile dysfunction, you’re not alone. Many men are too embarrassed to talk about it with their doctor. Others don’t even realize they have a problem. But ED is a common problem.
