Soft Erections and What to Do about Them

A man’s sexual response cycle has several phases:

  1. excitement or arousal
  2. plateau
  3. orgasm
  4. resolution.

Erection is a process that begins in the brain with mental stimulation or visual stimulation of the genitals. Sexual arousal is usually triggered by something that makes you feel sexual desire or excitement, such as seeing a naked person, thinking about sex, or being touched in a sexual way.

The excitement phase, or arousal phase, is when blood flow to the penis increases. The veins in the penis start to open up and the penis starts to fill with blood. The skin of the penis becomes thinner and more sensitive. The testicles begin to rise and the scrotum pulls closer to the body.

During the plateau phase, the penis continues to fill with blood, but the blood vessels start to constrict. The testicles are drawn up close to the body and the scrotum begins to tighten. The glans (head) of the penis becomes thinner and more sensitive. The man may feel the need to urinate, but this is not the same as an orgasm.

The orgasm phase is the shortest of the four phases. It is marked by a series of muscle spasms in the penis, testicles, anus, and pelvic area. The man may have an urge to urinate, but this is not the same as an orgasm. The orgasm is followed by a release of semen from the penis (ejaculation).

The resolution phase is when the penis and testicles return to their unaroused state. The skin of the penis becomes thicker and less sensitive. The veins in the penis close and the penis becomes flaccid (soft). The man may feel sleepy or have a sense of well-being.

Causes of Soft Erections

There are many potential causes of soft erections, including psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, or stress. Other potential causes include physical factors such as low testosterone levels, diabetes, or nerve damage. Medications, recreational drugs, and alcohol can also cause soft erections.

Treatment for Soft Erections

Treatment for soft erections depends on the underlying cause. If the cause is psychological, treatment may involve counseling or therapy. If the cause is physical, treatment may involve medication, lifestyle changes, or surgery.
