If you're experiencing erectile dysfunction, it could be the result of lifestyle choices or medical conditions. Learn more about what causes ED and what you can do to treat it.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual intercourse. It is a common condition that affects men of all ages, but is more common in older men.

There are many causes of erectile dysfunction, but most can be divided into two main categories:

  • Lifestyle choices

Many lifestyle choices can contribute to erectile dysfunction. These include:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Illegal drug use
  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise

All of these lifestyle choices can lead to atherosclerosis, a condition in which the arteries become narrowed and blocked due to the buildup of plaque. Atherosclerosis can restrict blood flow to the penis, resulting in erectile dysfunction.

  • Medical conditions

There are many medical conditions that can cause erectile dysfunction. These include:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Prostate cancer
  • Surgery for prostate or colon cancer
  • Sleep disorders

Treatment for erectile dysfunction depends on the underlying cause. In many cases, lifestyle changes can improve erectile dysfunction. These include:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Losing weight
  • Exercising regularly
  • Treating underlying medical conditions

If lifestyle changes do not improve erectile dysfunction, then medication or surgery may be considered. Medications that can be used to treat erectile dysfunction include:

  • Oral medications such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra)
  • Injections into the penis
  • Vacuum devices

Surgery for erectile dysfunction is typically only considered if other treatments have failed. The most common surgery is a penile implant. This is a surgery that involves placing a device inside the penis that can cause an erection.

While many may not realize it, erectile dysfunction, or #ED for short, is really common, affecting around 30 million men across the United States alone. And although having erection problems every so often isn’t a reason to be concerned, if you are consistently having problems keeping or getting an #erection, it could be a sign of an underlying medical condition such as low #testosterone, high #cholesterol, or #diabetes.
